How to choose the right window covering

The right window coverings will mirror the style and overall atmosphere of your space. These coverings accent and highlight the decor through color, texture, and patterns. The treatments will enhance the design and architectural interest, add functionality, provide light-blocking, quiet, and enhanced privacy. Give them the attention they deserve, and qualify your lifestyle, decor preferences, and room requirements as you would flooring or any other furnishings. We carry a large inventory, with window treatments from window blinds to roman shades, and from such highly recognizable companies as Hunter Douglas, Alta, and Skandia.

Who lives in your house?

On the surface, this may seem like an odd question, but think of this: Toddlers can pull on curtains, not to mention wiping their noses on it. Seniors need lightweight cellular or roman shades. If you have a resident who has sleep issues, such as one who works nights, draperies, or blackout curtains, could be the answer. Blinds or shades might work best in the window for any resident who uses a wheelchair or walker since there’s nothing to get caught in wheels.

Now think about the room

Consider the overall decor. Is there anything you want to accent or highlight? Be sure whatever you select coordinates; for example, a very traditional room might look odd if there’s something more casual on the window. Other things to consider are light and temperature. Upholstery and some floorings can fade or even change color, choosing window treatments more important than ever.

Plantation shutters add architectural interest and enhanced temperature control, privacy, and quiet. They are built directly into the window casement, so sun and heat get blocked between the shutter and the window, making a big difference. There’s no gapping, eliminating concerns of sun, heat, noise, and neighbors who like to peer into your home. Like any other window treatment, these can be motorized so you can control it, even when not home.

As for decor, they are like small French doors, opening for light and showing off your view, which is important especially if you have gorgeous water vistas or landscapes. They are available in wood, aluminum, or vinyl. Since they are custom-made, they can fit even the most untraditionally-shaped window, such as diamonds or ovals.
